Back to News
Katherine Goertz, Registrar for HMML’s Arca Artium collection, will present a lecture at TMORA (The Museum of Russian Art) in Minneapolis, Friday January 24 at 7pm entitled ‘A Jewish Narrative: Modernism and Mysticism in Mid-Century Jewish Art.’ Goertz’s lecture will provide an overview of the influential American Jewish art scene of the first half of the 20th century and discuss the spiritual and mystical in the work of Jewish artists, from Barnett Newman’s abstract Kabbalist meditations to Leonard Baskin’s bleak angels and prophets.
The lecture is being held in conjunction with the exhibit, curated by Goertz, ‘Mystical Imprints: Marc Chagall, Ben-Zion, and Ben Shahn’ presents the print work of three prominent 20th century Jewish artists born in the Russian Empire. Among these seventy pieces are etchings and lithographs from Chagall’s Bible series, Ben-Zion’s full 1980 portfolio The 36 Unknown, Shahn’s iconic The Alphabet of Creation, and more. Most of the works in Mystical Imprints have never been exhibited by HMML before.
The exhibit is up until March 22, 2020.
