HMML’s Malta Study Center’s exhibition “Valletta City and People” held at the Basilica of Saint Mary, August 23-September 30

In celebration of Malta’s capital city of Valletta and its recognition as the 2018 European Capital of Culture, the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library’s (HMML’s) Malta Study Center and the Basilica of Saint Mary’s are sponsoring the exhibition Valletta – City and People by award-winning, international photographer Stephen Busuttil.

In Valletta – City and People, Busuttil depicts how the city of Valletta and its people have changed religiously, culturally, and socially in response to unprecedented globalization. The ten-year photographic retrospective of Valletta captures how the small island nation confronts modernity at the center of the Mediterranean and on the border of Europe.

The timeframe chosen reflects his initial award-winning study of Valletta in 2008. The original study was based on a twenty-four-hour photographic journey in the city, where one photo was taken each hour to visually document the city’s life. Busuttil recreated this study in 2018, focusing on the rapid changes the city has undergone since joining the European Union in 2004.

“While we see the continuing traditions particular to the Catholic heritage of the Maltese islands, including the feasts of saints (festa) and carnival, the influence of Europe, and the wider world have left its mark on Valletta through increased tourism and globalization,” said Dr. Daniel K. Gullo, Joseph S. Micallef Curator of HMML’s Malta Study. “The changes are both dramatic and subtle, leaving one a sense of time, place, and change.”

The exhibition will be held in the John XXIII Gallery at the Basilica of Saint Mary from August 23-Sepember 30, 2018.
