Stift Göttweig. Bibliothek: HMML Repository

Stift Göttweig. Bibliothek

This Benedictine abbey was founded in 1083 by Bishop Altmann of Passau, and a school for the sons of nobility flourished there during the Middle Ages. A 12th-c. manuscript catalogue lists 55 codices, of which 46 still survive. A total of 549 of its manuscripts were photographed for HMML. These date largely from the 11th to the 17th c., with two dated to the 9th c. or earlier.
