The countries of the former Yugoslavia offer numerous opportunities for manuscript preservation. HMML previously partnered with Serbian communities in Croatia and Montenegro and in 2023 launched an ambitious series of projects with Franciscan monasteries in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the Ottoman period, only the Franciscans were permitted to serve the Catholic population in the region, and their monasteries are rich in both manuscript books and archival documents.
