Dr. Shahinian will share artifacts from manuscript illuminations, material culture, and texts that broaden access to the history, memory, and experience of martyrdom in Armenia and beyond. “Shakespeare and His World: A Celebration of HMML’s Second Folio” is a conversation with Dr. Matthew Harkins and Dr. Audrey Thorstad.

Dr. Harkins is the John and Lois Welshons professor, department of English, at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University. Dr. Thorstad is programming associate at HMML and co-curator of the exhibition, “Shakespeare’s Second Folio and the English Renaissance.” The exhibition can be seen in person at HMML through July, and an online version will be made available on HMML.org.

The English Renaissance (c. 1520–c.1650) was a time of cultural revival, religious turmoil, and the birth of what we today think of as English poetry. Join us as we journey back to England in the 16th and 17th centuries to learn more about the authors who shaped theater and English literature as we know it, such as William Shakespeare, Edmund Spencer, Ben Jonson, and John Milton, as well as the kings and queens who implemented royal censorship and banned books, including Queen Elizabeth I and King Charles I.
