HMML’s founder, Father Oliver Kapsner, OSB, visited Switzerland in 1964, seeking support for microfilming Swiss monastic manuscripts. Although he was not successful, HMML returned in the 1990s and microfilmed 1,005 manuscripts from three monastic collections at Einsiedeln (580 manuscripts), Engelberg (290 manuscripts), Sarnen (135 manuscripts), and Hermetschwil (4 manuscripts). The collections contain materials on all areas of study for pre-modern Europe.
