HMML Board Welcomes New Members, Elects New Vice Chair
July 1, 2025The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML) is pleased to announce the appointment of four new members to its 24-member Board of Directors. Beginning July 1, 2025, Fred de Sam Lazaro, Margaret Hedstrom, Charles (Chuck) Mifsud, and Dan Riley will each begin three-year terms on the board.
Additionally, Elliot J. Jaffee has been elected to serve a three-year term as vice chair of the board. Jaffee, who has served on the HMML Board since 2024, will now join the board’s leadership team alongside Keyna Skeffington, current chair.
HMML has long benefited from board members who value the humanities and recognize HMML’s critical mission of cultural preservation. The newest appointees continue this tradition, bringing with them deep expertise in international communications, digital preservation, law, finance, strategic leadership, and higher education.
Newly appointed board members include:
- Fred de Sam Lazaro, St. Paul, Minnesota—Director of the Under-Told Stories project at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, and correspondent for PBS NewsHour, de Sam Lazaro brings a wealth of experience in global storytelling and international affairs.
- Margaret Hedstrom, Grand Marais, Minnesota—An internationally-recognized expert in digital preservation and professor emerita of information at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Hedstrom’s work explores the intersection of computing, history, and information science.
- Charles (Chuck) Mifsud, Dublin, Ohio—An attorney at the Law Office of Charles Mifsud, LLC, Mifsud also chairs the Friends of HMML’s Malta Study Center.
- Dan Riley, Bloomington, Minnesota—A retired senior finance and operations executive at Target Corporation and Ameriprise Financial, Riley has previously served on HMML’s Board of Overseers and the Board of Trustees of Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.
With the insights and talents of these new members, the HMML Board is well-positioned to continue guiding the organization in its mission to partner with manuscript repositories around the world to digitally preserve and share handwritten heritage—prioritizing collections threatened by war, disaster, looting, or neglect. The addition of these new board members reinforces HMML’s commitment to stewardship, scholarship, and global heritage preservation.
