HMML is pleased to announce Dr. Jeremy R. Brown’s promotion to Curator of Eastern Christian Manuscripts. The position reflects HMML’s continued investment in Eastern Christian manuscript studies, strengthening leadership for HMML’s growing cataloging team while expanding support for one of HMML’s largest research communities—especially scholars working with Ethiopic manuscripts.

Jeremy joined HMML in 2023, bringing nearly two decades of experience working with Ethiopic manuscripts. Since then, he has cataloged or enhanced metadata for more than 4,500 Ethiopic manuscripts in HMML’s online Reading Room, significantly expanding access to these important collections. He has also represented HMML’s mission of preservation and access through presentations at the Society of Biblical Literature, Dumbarton Oaks, the Cosmos Club, HMML’s Ethiopic Manuscript Workshop, and the Institute of Ethiopian Studies.

Beyond his cataloging work, Jeremy has strengthened HMML’s connections with the broader scholarly community by teaching Geʻez in the joint Dumbarton Oaks / HMML Summer School; fostering collaborations with projects at Princeton University (Princeton, New Jersey) and elsewhere; and establishing new partnerships that have secured permission to make additional digital images and scanned microfilms available through HMML’s digital tools.

Jeremy is the author or coauthor of several recent publications, including Jonah in the Ethiopic Biblical Tradition (2026), A Handlist of the Manuscripts in the Institute of Ethiopian Studies (2025), and The Hatata Inquiries (2023). He is also completing a new book, Catalog of Ethiopic Codices at the Catholic University of America.

Jeremy’s promotion continues HMML’s longstanding commitment to Ethiopic manuscript studies, building on the legacy of the Ethiopian Manuscript Microfilm Library (EMML) project and the pioneering scholarship of Dr. William Macomber and Dr. Getatchew Haile.

“Working with Jeremy is a joy. He takes tremendous initiative in advocating for Ethiopic scholars and communities, has a gift for communicating complex ideas with clarity and enthusiasm, and is always willing to lend a helping hand to colleagues,” said HMML’s Director of Cataloging & Library Services, Dr. Catherine Walsh. “Having Jeremy on the team is a win for HMML and for everyone who benefits from our mission to preserve and share cultural heritage.”
